FER

FER stands for Fan Energy Rating. It’s a Department of Energy (DOE) standard for minimum airflow efficiency for residential furnace blower fans in oil and gas furnaces and gas packaged units.

The DOE’s goal with FER standards is to set criteria and minimum airflow limits that will promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. This includes specifications related to the electrical power the fans use in relation to airflow performance. Higher FER values typically indicate more energy-efficient fans.

FER is expressed in terms of watts per 1,000 cubic feet per minute (CFM) delivered and considers energy consumption in three different modes: heating, cooling, and constant circulation.

Many American Standard® furnaces utilize the Vortica™ II Blower. Designed exclusively for American Standard®, it performs quietly and efficiently in both heating and cooling seasons. More efficient furnace fans help you save energy and reduce carbon emissions. It’s a win-win.
