Ductless mini-split systems are heating and cooling systems that work without the ductwork that’s needed in a traditional central HVAC system. In their truest form, they consist of one indoor unit and one outdoor unit - usually a mini-split heat pump. Instead of being connected by ductwork, the indoor and outdoor units are connected by refrigerant lines.
The indoor units include:
An experienced HVAC professional can easily install a mini-split HVAC system in most homes. Ductless heating and cooling systems are great comfort solutions for spaces without ductwork such as a home addition, garage, or gym.
There are even ducted mini-split units that can add supplemental heating and cooling to a space that is heated and cooled by a traditional ducted HVAC system.
When multiple mini-split indoor units (up to 8) are tied to an outdoor mini-split heat pump, it’s called a multi-split ductless system or multi-zone ductless system. They offer ductless heating and cooling for an entire home. Each zone has its own indoor unit and a remote control. You can set a different temperature for each zone.
A multi-zone ductless system can be a good solution for both new construction and for comfortable heating and cooling an older home without ductwork.
If you don’t need heating, but simply want to cool an area such as a garage or home gym, you can opt for a mini-split air conditioner. Learn more about a mini-split AC and if it’s right for you.
