A hybrid HVAC system is a home comfort system that combines a heat pump with a gas furnace (also available in packaged systems). For areas with colder temperatures, combining electric heating (heat pump) with gas heating (furnace) helps you stay warm in sub-zero temperatures which can be challenging for a heat pump.
In a split system, the heat pump is called a dual-fuel heat pump, although it is really a dual-fuel system. The electric heat pump cools your home in the summer and heats your home in the fall and winter. When temperatures drop too low for the heat pump to heat efficiently, the furnace automatically kicks in to provide optimal comfort.
A hybrid system can be a great solution for homes in colder climates if you want the efficiency of a heat pump but the guarantee of a warm and cozy home in the winter.
