Is it better to repair or replace your system?
We’ll help you make the right decision
Get the info you need to make your best choice
Deciding between repairing or replacing your HVAC is a major financial choice you should weigh carefully. Take these factors into consideration before you spend a dime.
- Age: Your system’s age can determine whether a repair is worth your money or if a replacement is best. Air conditioners and heat pumps can last 10 to 12 years while furnaces usually last 15 to 20 years.
- Efficiency: Does your system still perform at its peak? Older systems can create higher utility bills because they’re not as energy-efficient as newer models.
- Warranty: Your warranty may cover the cost of replacing certain parts and components. If not, a repair might make more financial sense. Look up your existing warranty.
- Long-Term Costs: No matter which you choose, either a repair or replacement will cost you money. You’ll need to decide which option gives you the biggest return on your investment.
- R-22 Freon: The government has discontinued Freon® because of its effects on the ozone layer. If your unit contains Freon, you’ll need to replace it with the new R140A refrigerant. You may want to replace your unit now since you’ll have to do it later. Learn more about the Freon phase out.
- Overall Condition: If your unit makes strange noises, emits odd smells or frequently breaks down, it might not be worth making anymore repairs.
Your safety is most important as some defects or damage in your system could be life-threatening. (For example, a cracked heat exchanger on your furnace may allow carbon monoxide to leak into your home.) In those situations, you must replace your system. Smaller problems, like faulty wiring, may warrant a simple repair. Determine whether your unit could place you or others at risk.
